Starr wanted Ralph Tresvant to sing lead because he sounded so much like Michael Jackson. ![]() ![]() He wanted to make them the next Jackson 5. They didn’t win first prize, but Starr wanted to sign them because he was impressed with their performance. They performed at a talent contest in 1982 held by producer Maurice Starr. They were inspired by The Jackson 5 and wanted to be singers. New Edition consisted of original members Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Mike Bivins.
